Mary Magdalene
Mary Magdalene recognized Jesus Christ through her heart. He cleansed her seven passions/sins. She became a new person, totally changed by her true repentance and humility. Before His death, she felt compelled to anoint His feet as a sign of gratitude, although this was also a sign of preparation for burial. She knelt at his feet, weeping and wetting his feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment "(Luke 7:36-37). Tears are the sign of true repentance, a second baptism of the soul. Mary Magdalene was also one of the first to appear at the empty tomb of Jesus and to whom He appeared after his resurrection and was the first to proclaim Him "I have seen the Lord" (Jn.20:18).
In this piece, I depicted the interaction between Christ and Mary Magdalene - Christ blessing and anointing her head with the Spirit, while she kneels down and anoints his feet with myrrth and her tears. Christ is seen fragmentarily through His Hand and feet, and also through the symbols of the Eucharist - Wheat and Grapevines. Interestingly enough, at first I was considering depicting the Theotokos (Vigin Mary), yet last year I felt that this image belongs to Mary Magdalene and completed it upon the feast of St. Mary Magdalene - July 22.
